"Very early in my career, I pitched a big news story to my editors (probably the biggest I’d ever pitched). They loved it—and immediately decided to assign it to a more seasoned, experienced, award-winning writer. I was furious and dejected, and stewed over it briefly until it occurred to me that maybe I should actually make the case for myself instead of sulking. I did, in a long memo explaining what I’d bring to the project and how well I knew the territory, and the editor in chief at the time read my memo, and walked back to my desk holding it. 'Anyone who wants something this badly,' she said, 'should get it.' I worked my butt off on that story, saw it go on to win an award, and more than that learned that no one’s going to give you anything, ever, if you don’t ask for it. Which I have found to this day to be true!"
