Jackie Biskupski, Mayor of Salt Lake City. She is the second female and first openly gay mayor of Salt Lake City.
"Women must lead. If we are going to change the world, we have to step up. Women bring a different set of life experiences, which helps them see the world in different ways. It changes everything to have them involved.”
“I knew at a young age I’d be doing something around civil rights. I didn’t know what that would look like until, one day, I was watching the news and there was a story about how these kids were trying to start the first high school gay-straight alliance in the state, and the school board voted to ban all clubs in response. This was it for me. I was like, Oh my gosh, I’m an adult and I’ve done nothing to make life easier for these kids. So I got off the couch and helped a friend run for office — and a year later, I ran. First for City Council — I lost by less than 50 votes — then for state legislature. After serving 13 years, I read a study about a direct prison pipeline in our public schools, and I decided, You know, I need to run for mayor.”
