Libby Schaaf

Libby Schaaf

Libby Schaaf, Mayor of Oakland

She is the second female mayor in Oakland’s history. This past February after the swearing in of Oakland’s first female police chief, Anne Kirkpatrick, every major leadership position in Oakland’s city government is held by women: “the mayor, the city administrator, the city administrator’s three top deputies, the police chief, and the fire chief.”

Mayor Schaaf says while she “didn’t set out to hire women, these are the most competent, accomplished, hard-working professionals that I could have put into these positions.”

When she first ran for office three years ago, she was faced critiques “making me out to be a bad mother. People were telling me that my children are too young, that I would regret it. I’m definitely down with having leaders who have high compassion and low egos and have clear values, and are in this for the long-time benefit of Oakland. We live here. We work here. Our families are here. Our children are here.”
