Maëlle Gavet, COO of the real estate startup Compass, formerly EVP of Priceline and CEO of Ozone, an e-commerce business in Moscow.
"Startups should be wary when fundraising. Wary about their company’s valuation, about exit options and investor expectations. Founders should be careful, too, about the terms and conditions which are attached to the deal, and always be realistic about when they are throwing good money after bad (when a business fails to ignite). But after bearing all of those factors in mind, and so long as a deal still seems fair, my advice is this: There’s no such thing as raising too much money. Raise as much as you can early on. And then be smart enough to set some of it aside for when the going gets tough, because rest assured it almost certainly will.”
